Austin Smotherman shot 3-under 68 in Sunday's final round to win the Bank of Utah Championship by two strokes over Doug Ghim, capturing his first PGA Tour victory in his 100th career start. The 32-year-old finished at 26-under 258, breaking the tournament's 72-hole record by eight shots.
Smotherman built a three-shot lead early in the round with tap-in birdies and a 35-foot birdie on the fifth hole, but the margin narrowed dramatically when his approach on the 13th hole plugged near the lip of a bunker. He made double bogey to reduce his lead to just one shot over Trace Crowe, who had made a 40-foot eagle on the 14th hole.
The leader responded immediately with a perfectly positioned tee shot on the 14th that rolled to 6 feet. Though he missed the eagle putt, the birdie restored his two-shot advantage. He added another birdie on the 16th hole from just inside 12 feet to secure the victory with two holes remaining.
Ghim finished second after struggling with his putting in the final round, three-putting from 30 feet on the 13th and missing a 6-foot par putt on the 15th. He recovered with a birdie on the final hole for a 69 that moved him from 89th to 58th in FedExCup standings.
The victory provides Smotherman with a two-year exemption and qualification for the lucrative Championship Series when the new competitive model begins in 2028. He also moves to 51st in the FedExCup Fall standings and is likely to qualify for signature events at Pebble Beach and Riviera next year.
