President Donald Trump attended the final day of the Presidents Cup at Medinah Country Club and addressed fans from the first tee before Sunday's singles matches began. The 80-year-old spoke for about 60 seconds despite reportedly requesting a 15-minute slot prior to the action.
After being introduced by PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp, Trump made a jibe at what he called the fake news media regarding his expected reception. He claimed he didn't have the courage to make a short speech as Rolapp had requested, instead insisting that people wanted to see golf rather than hear speeches.
Trump, who was named honorary chairman of the Presidents Cup during the buildup, finished his brief remarks by stating the USA is doing great, better than ever before, and expressing his anticipation for what he called a very interesting day of golf.
The appearance came as the U.S. team faced a precarious three-point deficit heading into Sunday's matches, trailing the International team 10.5-7.5 in their pursuit of an 11th consecutive Presidents Cup title.
