McIlroy erased Clark's five-shot advantage and pulled level by the 11th hole, but Clark regained control with three closing birdies. McIlroy shot 69 and finished at 13 under.
McIlroy said a practice session with coach Michael Bannon helped correct recent swing problems after he finished 66th in Memphis. He left Bellerive encouraged by his improved play.
