Tom Kim has withdrawn from next week's Baycurrent Classic at Yokohama Country Club following his individual gold medal victory at the Asian Games in Japan. The four-time PGA Tour winner's achievement earned him an exemption from mandatory military service in South Korea, where able-bodied males typically must serve 18 to 21 months before age 28.
Kim had been scheduled to compete in the 72-player no-cut event but Norwegian Kris Ventura will take his place in the field. The withdrawal comes after Kim left last week's Presidents Cup before its conclusion to travel to Japan for the Asian Games competition.
The 24-year-old's recent schedule included starring for the International team at the Presidents Cup at Medinah before departing for his successful pursuit of gold medal status. The Asian Games victory represents one of the most consequential achievements of Kim's career beyond his PGA Tour success.
The Baycurrent Classic field remains strong with defending champion Xander Schauffele, US Open winner Wyndham Clark, Collin Morikawa, Justin Thomas and local favorite Hideki Matsuyama among the notable competitors scheduled for the October 8-11 event.
