The Open will use a four-hole aggregate playoff at Royal Birkdale.

If players are tied after 72 holes at this year's Open, they will play a four-hole aggregate playoff at Royal Birkdale. If the tie remains, the 18th hole will be used until a winner is decided.

The format differs from last year's planned Royal Portrush playoff, which would have used three holes. The R&A adjusts the aggregate playoff holes based on the host course.
